Es
Who said a shelf always has to stand straight? Es plays with this principle by taking the tilted position to extremes. Precise tolerances determine the right relation between too much and too little wobbling.

A little bit askew

„Konstantin, carry it (Es) in.“ So much for choosing a name. Beech rods penetrate the shelf floors, held by simple brackets. While the individual connections are slack, the filled shelf stabilizes itself in the inclined position. The compartments always remain horizontal. Precise tolerances determine the right relation between too much and too little wobbling.

Material
Shelf Boards: FU birch plywood with coating or beech plywood untreated
Rods: beech untreated

Description

Es

Design: Konstantin Grcic, 1998

Actually Es should stand straight

Today he is a well-established name in the international design scene, but when he began collaborating with Nils Holger Moormann, Konstantin Grcic was only known in insider circles. The chemistry was right from the very beginning, as was the design philosophy. And coincidence played a small part. Initially it was not planned that Es would not stand straight, but as a wobbly shelf in our collection. Today we could not imagine our collection without the somewhat askew character amongst our shelves.

Konstantin Grcic on Es

"This is probably the simplest piece of furniture I‘ve designed. I wanted to throw out the high-tech, over-engineered pretensions of the furniture industry and ignore all of its rules. My shelf may have no firm structure, but it‘s still a shelf. It gets stability with the multiplication of its joints, not with their individual strength."

Material Properties and Care
Es Material properties and care

FU Black (birch plywood)

Material properties:

Several birch veneers are cross-glued, creating a material with a high level of dimensional stability. Generally our birch plywood panels are surface-coated or oiled. They are produced in Finland. The slowly-growing trees in the Finnish climate create fine-grain wood of consistently high quality. The following properties can occur: knot inclusions on the edge and possibly different edge colors (image 1), inclusions, glossy stripes or matt areas on the surface (image 2).

Cleaning and care:

Light surface soiling on the untreated edges can be removed using fine-grain sandpaper. Coated surfaces can be cleaned using a soft cloth with lukewarm water and a small amount of colourless washing-up liquid. Please only wipe oiled surfaces with a slightly damp cloth and as necessary treat with colourless oil.
